My First Group Trip: Bali, 2021

Let me take you back to 2021, the year I tried something new and joined my first ever group trip to Bali, Indonesia. This trip wasn’t just about visiting a dream destination, it was about saying “yes” to new experiences, new people, and letting life surprise me in the best way possible.

Manifesting Bali

The magic of this trip started months before I even booked it. Picture me sitting in my living room, scrolling through Bali travel videos, and boldly declaring, “I’m going to Bali next year.” I didn’t know how, when, or with whom, but I was certain it was happening. Fast forward 6-7 months, and I stumbled upon a group trip hosted by a fellow healthcare worker I followed on social media. I signed up immediately, it felt like fate. Little did I know, this decision would lead to lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deeper love for travel.

Embracing the Unknown

Here’s the thing: I didn’t know a single soul on this trip. For many, that might sound intimidating, but for me, it was an adventure waiting to happen. The group was made up of strangers from different backgrounds, cities and cultures the only real thing that connected us was the fact that we all worked in healthcare. By the end of the trip, these strangers had become friends and now family I keep in touch with, visit, and cherish to this day.

If you’ve ever hesitated to join a group trip because you don’t know anyone, let me tell you, it’s worth the leap. You never know who you’ll meet or the connections you’ll make.

Bali: More Than Just a Destination

Let’s talk about Bali. It’s breathtaking, to say the least. From lush rice terraces and serene beaches to vibrant culture and warm-hearted locals, Bali is truly a slice of paradise. But as beautiful as it is, it’s also important to approach the island with respect and awareness.

Bali’s tourism boom has brought luxury villas and world-class resorts, but it has also displaced many locals from their homes. It’s a stark reminder of the economic disparity between tourists and residents. When visiting, I recommend supporting local businesses, dining at family-owned restaurants, and engaging in activities that contribute directly to the community. Be mindful of where your money goes and recognize the privilege of traveling to such a place.

Lessons Learned

This trip wasn’t just a vacation, it was a masterclass in travel, relationships, and spontaneity. Here are a few lessons I took away from my time in Bali:

  1. Group Trips Are What You Make Them
The host sets the tone for the trip, so choose wisely. Whether you’re looking for a wellness retreat, a party vibe, or a mix of both, pick a trip that aligns with your goals. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the host with questions, most are happy to help.
  2. Stick to the Itinerary (or Don’t)
Group trips often come with set plans, but remember, you’re not obligated to follow them to the letter. Take advantage of group activities, but carve out time to explore on your own or with others who share your interests.
  3. Stay Longer If You Can
My biggest regret? Not extending my trip. After spending nearly $1,000 on a round-trip flight from St. Louis, I wish I’d planned extra days to explore more of Bali or even hop to another nearby country. If you’re making a long journey, give yourself time to soak it all in.
  4. Be Open to Unexpected Opportunities
One of my favorite memories happened before the trip officially began. My flight arrived in Bali at midnight, but the group wasn’t meeting until 11 a.m. While bracing for a long airport wait, I struck up a conversation with the woman sitting next to me on the plane. She was also traveling solo, staying at a nearby hotel, and invited me to join her. Trusting my instincts, I accepted—and what could have been a boring layover turned into a beautiful morning by the beach with a new acquaintance.
  5. Excursions or Extras         Don’t feel pressured to add-on excursions with the tour group, a lot of times they will be available on other sites or apps, I frequently use Viator, for less than what the tour group is charging.

Why You Should Try a Group Trip

If you’re nervous about traveling solo, crave community, or just want to experience a new destination with like minded people, a group trip might be perfect for you. It’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, let someone else handle the planning, and focus on making memories.

That Bali trip taught me so much about the joy of shared experiences and the beauty of embracing the unknown. It was a reminder that the world is full of incredible people and places, just waiting for you to discover them.

So, what are you waiting for? Take that leap. Say yes to the group trip. You never know, it might just change your life.

Join Me in Bali: June 2025

The magic of Bali is calling me back, and this time, I I am going on a group trip that a very close friend of mine is hosting that I ironically met on a recent group trip to Puerto Rico.  In June 2025, I’ll be heading back to this incredible island on another group trip, and there are still plenty of spots available!

If you’re looking for a chance to connect with like-minded individuals, experience the beauty and spirituality of Bali, and find rest and relaxation in one of the most serene places on earth, this is your sign to join the trip.

This trip is about more than just visiting a destination—it’s about creating community and embracing the open, loving energy that Bali is known for. This will definitely be a time of self exploration community building and beautiful rest and wellness.
