A Culinary Journey: From Picky Eater to Food Explorer

As a child, my diet revolved around chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and ice cream. I was the quintessential picky eater, blissfully unaware of the culinary world that awaited beyond my favorite three foods. It wasn’t until college that I began to experiment with vegetarianism and veganism—a phase that opened my mind, if only slightly, to the vast array of flavors out there. Fast forward to three years of globe-trotting, and I now embrace every opportunity to try new dishes. Food has become a pivotal reason for my travels, and the joy of tasting diverse cuisines continues to fuel my wanderlust.

Puerto Viejo: Caribbean flavors at Aunt Lydia’s

If you find yourself in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, don’t miss an authentic Caribbean restaurant just a couple of blocks off the main strip. Known as Auntie Lydia’s, this hidden gem features a vibrant open-concept space adorned with beautiful Caribbean artwork. The menu offers a delightful array of dishes, from whole fish to oxtail and sorrel to drink, all served in generous portions.

The Caribbean chicken, in particular, falls right off the bone, showcasing the tender, flavorful cooking of Miss Lydia herself, who often checks in on her guests with warmth and hospitality. Aunt Lydia’s is not just a meal; it’s a culinary experience you won’t want to miss during your stay.

Japan: A Diverse Culinary Landscape

Contrary to popular belief, Japan boasts a vibrant food scene far beyond ramen and sushi. My travels took me to Tokyo and Kyoto, where I discovered that the culinary landscape is as diverse as the people who inhabit it. One unforgettable experience was dining at Adi, a cozy Nepalese restaurant in Meguro City. Owned by Chef Kanchan, the restaurant is a gem tucked away from the usual tourist spots.

Here, the menu changes frequently based on fresh deliveries from local farmers, allowing guests to experience the flavors that have been passed down through generations. When I visited with friends, we opted for the omakase with drink pairings. Each plate was a work of art, and Kanchan’s passion for his craft shone through as he explained the origins of each dish and drink. The warmth of the atmosphere made us feel like we were dining in a friend’s home, a rare and intimate experience in the heart of the bustling city.

Singapore: A Food Lover’s Dream

If culinary diversity has a capital, it’s surely Singapore. With a rich tapestry of cultures converging in one city, the food scene is nothing short of spectacular. One of my favorite finds was Bar Stories, a quirky little bar tucked away on Arab Street. At first glance, it appeared unassuming, but stepping inside revealed a world of creativity.

The bartenders at Bar Stories excel in crafting cocktails tailored to your preferences. Each drink was a visual masterpiece that tasted as extraordinary as it looked. Despite the price tag of $25 per drink, the unique experience made it worthwhile. The food was equally impressive; I never imagined I’d be savoring kangaroo meat in Singapore. The dinner for two set was a feast of diverse flavors, perfectly portioned and delicious. From their homemade pita to exquisite dips and desserts that struck the perfect balance of sweetness, every bite was a celebration of culinary innovation.

Embrace the Adventure of Food

As I reflect on my journey from a picky eater to an adventurous foodie, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone while traveling. Don’t shy away from trying local delicacies, even if they seem unusual. Seek out places without English menus; these hidden gems often offer the most authentic dining experiences. Immerse yourself in the local culture through its food, but remember to have fun along the way. You never know what culinary adventure awaits just around the corner.

Traveling has taught me that food is not just sustenance—it’s a bridge to understanding cultures, forging connections, and creating lasting memories. So, pack your bags, and get ready to embark on a delicious journey that will forever change the way you view food.
