Palawan Island Adventure: El Nido to Coron

Ever dreamed of a tropical escape that’s as refreshing as it is unforgettable? Picture this: a weekend adventure exploring the breathtaking islands of the Philippines, where over 7,000 islands make up the country with their natural beauty. During my two-week stay in this paradise, I had the chance to disconnect completely and dive into one of the most unique excursions I’ve ever experienced. If you’re planning a trip to the Philippines, make sure to carve out time for this 3 or 5-day boat trip—it’s a must-do!

Choosing Your Starting Point

You can kick off this island-hopping journey from either El Nido or Coron. Both towns are bustling with charm and offer various accommodation options. They’re perfect for a few nights of exploring before setting sail. Whether you’re into snorkeling, diving, or just

enjoying the warm waters, these towns have something for everyone. Plus, they’re small enough that getting around is a breeze—bicycles, motorbikes, and tuk-tuks are the local favorites.

Booking Your Trip

Several companies offer these boat tours, so booking ahead is a good idea. My friend and I secured our spots about three weeks in advance, and there were still a few dates available. The price for a 3-day tour is around $300 per person, which includes everything from hotel pick-up to meals. It’s a good value considering the all-inclusive nature of the trip.

Getting There

Fly into Manila or Cebu, the Philippines’ main gateways. From there, catch a flight or boat to Coron or El Nido. Given the distance between international flights and your island departure, I recommend giving yourself some extra time to avoid any travel hiccups.

Life on the Boat

Once you board, you’ll be greeted by your fellow adventurers—anywhere from 15-25 people,  depending on the group size. The

boats, called bangkas, are traditional Philippine vessels with plenty of space. Most feature two decks, a dining area, an upper deck for relaxing, and a bathroom.

Adventure Awaits

Here’s a taste of what to expect each day:

  • Day 1: Start your day at 8 a.m. with turtle watching and snorkeling. Enjoy the beach and the clear, inviting waters.
  • Day 2: Feel the thrill of cliff jumping (weather permitting) and indulge in more beach time and snorkeling.
  • Day 3: Hike to breathtaking spots like Kayangan Lake or explore a small local village before the boat docks back at port around 4:30 p.m.

There are over 70 islands in the area for the tour guides to choose from, so each trip might look a little different but offer the same overall experience.

Daily Highlights

  • Snorkeling: Dive into Palawan’s vibrant coral reefs, teeming with colorful fish. It’s a snorkeler’s dream, and our guides ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all levels.
  • Kayaking: Paddle through serene lagoons and along picturesque island shores, soaking in the lush flora and fauna.
  • Cliff Jumping: For those seeking a rush, cliff jumping into crystal-clear waters is an exhilarating highlight. Safety instructions and supervision are provided to ensure you have a blast.
  • Turtle Watching: At Bulawit, observe majestic turtles in their natural habitat and learn about their conservation.
  • Hiking: A hike to Kayangan Lake for panoramic views and the tranquil beauty of Palawan.

The Boat Experience

When you board, your big luggage will be stowed away, leaving you with a small bag of essentials. Introduce yourself to your fellow travelers, including the captain, tour guide, and support staff. You’ll get to know your group well as you journey through the islands, where you’ll mostly encounter just your group and a few island residents.

Disconnect to Reconnect

One of the best parts of this trip is the chance to disconnect from the digital world. With no cell service and electricity on the islands, you’ll truly be off the grid. Nights are

illuminated by stars, and while the huts are basic—featuring mosquito nets and bucket showers—they offer a charm that enhances the experience.

Food and Accommodation

Meals are prepared family-style, featuring traditional Filipino dishes that are as delicious as they are

beautifully presented. Snacks and drinks, including some alcoholic options, are provided throughout the trip. Overnight stays are in small island huts with basic amenities, perfect for a night under the stars.

The huts come with blankets, a pillow and a mosquito net which will be needed. The shower areas are essentially a big bucket of water with a ladle to pour over yourself in the stall. This I due to the smaller islands not being set up like the towns.

This excursion is more than just a trip; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in nature, interact with fellow travelers, and take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a wonderful way to experience the natural wonders of the Philippines, surrounded by incredible food and great company. So, if you’re ready for an adventure that’s both exhilarating and rejuvenating, this island-hopping journey is the perfect addition to your Philippine getaway.
