7-Day Itinerary: Bangkok and Phuket

Thailand is a dream destination for many travelers, and combining the vibrant city life of Bangkok with the stunning beaches of Phuket is the perfect way to experience the best of both worlds. Whether you’re a foodie, an adventure seeker, or someone looking to relax, this 7-day itinerary has something for everyone!

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok

Welcome to Bangkok! After checking into your hotel, take some time to settle in. Once you’re refreshed, head out to explore the bustling streets. Start your evening with a visit to Asiatique the Riverfront, a lively night market with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Enjoy dinner by the river, sampling local street food like pad thai and mango sticky rice while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Or stay in and relax at your accommodations after your long day of traveling.  Either way, try not to plan too much on the first day of your arrival in case of jet leg or delays with your arrival.

Day 2: Temples and Culture in Bangkok

Begin your day with a visit to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Arrive early to beat the crowds and fully appreciate the stunning architecture and rich history. Afterward, take a short walk to Wat Pho, home to the impressive Reclining Buddha. In the afternoon, enjoy a traditional Thai massage at one of the nearby spas to rejuvenate after your temple tour. Ensure you bring good walking shoes as you will be taking a lot of steps, I usually averaged about 15-20 thousand a day.

In the evening, head to Khao San Road, where you can explore street stalls, grab dinner, and enjoy the lively nightlife. This road is a party every night, but if you really want to go when it is in top shape, go during the weekend. The street will be filled with people from all over the world and of all age groups. On weekends, lots of the bars will have live music as well.

Day 3: Food Tour Through Bangkok

Start the morning off by joining a 17-course food tour! Yes, 17 courses. They are mostly full sized meals that are shared between 2-4 people. You are guaranteed not to leave hungry.  One of the best food tours I’ve been on, we tried everything from traditional Thai food to duck to fruits and desserts With everything in between. Book on viator for an easy morning treat.

In the evening and unwind with dinner at a rooftop restaurant like Vertigo and Moon Bar, offering stunning views of the city skyline. Or enjoy one of the many family-owned restaurants in the streets of Bangkok. One of my favorites I found while I stayed wasKope Hya Tai Kee. The highlight of the menu was definitely the green coconut curry and their coffee drinks. They have many breakfast and lunch items available.

Day 4: Travel to Phuket

After breakfast, take a flight from Bangkok to Phuket. There are busses and trains that are an option but take much longer in comparison to the cost of the 90 min flight.  Upon arrival, check into your accommodations and then head to Patong Beach for some sun and relaxation. In the afternoon, indulge in water sports such as jet skiing or parasailing. Selena Phuket is a nice hostel or hotel option for small groups, solo, or remote travelers. It’s tucked away outside of the main city so be prepared to rent a scooter or get a grab to get around.

As the sun sets, explore the vibrant nightlife of Patong. Enjoy dinner at one of the beachside restaurants, followed by a visit to the famous Bangla Road for some entertainment. This street is the definition of party life. Here you will find everything from dive bars to nicer night clubs offering bottle service. A lot of the bar workers are male focused for tips but it’s still a fun girl’s night out. I would recommend leaving any children at the hotel.

Day 5: Island Hopping Adventure

Set off on an island-hopping tour to explore the nearby islands. Consider visiting Phi Phi Islands or James Bond Island. Most tours include snorkeling, swimming, and a delicious lunch on the beach. Experience the breathtaking beauty of turquoise waters and limestone cliffs.

These tours are usually the highlight of peoples vacations to Phuket. The waters and scenery are like no other. I would highly encourage you to book a few weeks ahead to ensure a spot during peak seasons. During off season ensure you book through a party that refunds or allows you to change dates in case of poor weather.

Return to Phuket in the evening and relax at your hotel after a day filled with adventure. These day trips are usually long and, in the sun, so be prepared to plan something light afterwards. Don’t forget to add in time to rest and recover.

Day 6: Cultural Exploration in Phuket

Spend your day exploring Phuket’s cultural sites. Start with a visit to Wat Chalong, the largest and most important Buddhist temple on the island. Afterward, head to the Big Buddha, a stunning 45-meter-tall statue that offers panoramic views of the island. When visiting these sites, ensure you bring clothing to cover your shoulder and knees. While the temples usually have wraps to use, they might not be as picture perfect as bringing your own. They also tend to be thicker and warmer.

In the afternoon, explore the historic area of Old Phuket Town, where you can admire colorful Sino-Portuguese architecture and browse local shops. Enjoy dinner at a local eatery, sampling regional dishes like Massaman curry or fresh seafood. There are a ton of options for food in this area, and it is likely you’ll run into a street market or two. Don’t be afraid to try the food and enjoy how the locals do. These are also the places you want to look out for trinkets or souvenirs for others or yourself.

Day 7: Relaxation and Departure

On your final day, take it easy. Spend the morning lounging on the beach or by the pool. If you’re up for it, consider a cooking class to learn how to make authentic Thai dishes.

After lunch, take some time for last-minute shopping or souvenir hunting before your flight. Reflect on the incredible experiences you’ve had over the past week as you prepare to head home.

This 7-day itinerary allows you to experience the vibrant city life of Bangkok alongside the stunning natural beauty of Phuket. From cultural excursions to beach relaxation, you’ll create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Thailand is a land of smiles, and this trip will surely leave you grinning from ear to ear! Be careful not to plan too much as it can be overwhelming in the humidity. Drinks lots of water or coconuts while you’re out and about to ensure you stay hydrated. Overall, keep your mind open to deviating from the itinerary if you find yourself in a position to try something new or seasonal. Don’t become so focused on checking the itinerary off that you lose site of the wonders in front of you.
